1. Stargazing can be easy
2. The basics of astronomy can be easily understood
Beyond Earth provides entertaining stargazing experiences either at our own venue, or your home or holiday accommodation. We also bring the ‘wonders of space’ into the classrooms of local schools and into school camps.
I'm John Rowe. My wife and I settled in Taupō in 2024. Prior to this, I worked as an astronomy educator and planetarium presenter for nearly a decade at Stardome Observatory and Planetarium in Auckland.
With a passion for sharing my knowledge about space, I've been reaching out to students, school camps, and the public through my small business, Beyond Earth.
My love for space began at age nine when I discovered a beautifully illustrated book titled Exploring the Planets in my school library. My teacher allowed me to take the book home over the summer holidays. This early experience showed me how influential books, art, and great teachers can be.
You don't need expensive equipment to enjoy the night sky. With a free app like Stellarium on your phone and your eyes, you can embark on your stellar journey. There are countless online star charts and resources to guide you.
Joining an Astronomical Society or a local enthusiasts' group can be a great next step. The Auckland Astronomical Society, for example, offers activities for everyone from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts. Binoculars are a good option for those unsure of their interest level, as they are versatile for both stargazing and terrestrial use.
Telescopes are more affordable than ever. Before purchasing one, consider joining a local group or society to learn and try out different equipment. This helps you gauge your interest and find what suits you best.
Remember, the sky's the limit! If you're technically inclined, delve into astrophotography or even pursue an astronomical career. Who knows where your journey might lead?
